Q: Hello, John, how are you?
JO: Very good thanks!
Q: You've been to Japan before, once on holiday, I believe. Is that correct?
JO: Yes. My daughter, Jen, has a GCSE in Japanese language and she got to the age of 30, but had never actually been to Japan, and I thought it was a bit of a waste, really, to put all that work in and never use the language properly. So for her 30th birthday present, we came over to Japan, and yeah, had a couple of weeks here. She's taken it quite seriously, because a couple of years ago she went back over and did a three-month language course. She's coming over with us when we do the tour to do a bit of translating for us.
Q: But that time you came, you didn't play any gigs or perform, did you?
JO: I just did, one of those, you know, guest-spot things and did a couple of things but it wasn't a gig. I got to play a couple of songs just so that I could say, I actually played guitar in Tokyo. I think Tokyo will be something like 5,350th gig.
Q: That's a lot of gigs.
JO: A couple of years ago, back in 2020, I had a big concert at Shepherd’s Bush Empire to celebrate my 5,000th gig and just in case anybody doubted it, I actually produced a newspaper which listed every single one of the 5,000 gigs.
Q: So you've kept diaries all the way through this?
JO: Yes, I celebrated my 2,000th gig in 1993, I think and I'd kept a record of the first 2,000, so I just made sure I did. I thought it might be significant at some point and hopefully, because we're around a third of the way since then, hopefully we'll make gigs for 6,000 at some point.
Q: You’re coming with the Big Band this time and you’ve been together 33 and 1/3 years.
JO: Yes it’s quite astonishing really when I think back. Richard and I put this band together all those years ago when I was about 40 years old and we’ve basically stuck together as a band ever since. The band refer to it as lack of ambition. (laughs) 33 and 1/3 rpm is what an LP turns at so on the tour, we’ll be recording an LP as we go around the world. It’s crowdfunded so hopefully that will pay for a bit of the trip.
Q: Who is in the band John?
JO: There’s Richard Holgarth on guitar who also does some stuff with Eddie and the Hot Rods, Murray Torkildsen on rhythm guitar, Adam Batterbee on drums and Seymour on bass. We’re also bringing a couple of film crew as well people as we’re making a documentary as we go.
Q: Choosing a setlist, because you've never been here before, the palette's probably quite wide open.
JO: I think so, but I think we'll stay with the spirit of the live album which is called The Set Remains The Same.
Q: Any plans to do anything with Morgan Fisher? I caught up with him about a week ago and he said he's looking forward to seeing you.
JO: Yeah we’ll certainly do a couple of songs with the band from my first solo album that he played keyboards on and was produced by Neil Innes and Morgan does a sort of little session thing at his house, so I've been invited to do that; I'm hoping to sort of put that in as well.

JO: ええ、ありがとう。とても元気だよ。
Q: 以前、日本に行ったことがあるそうですね。一度、休暇で訪れたと伺いましたが、それで合っていますか？
JO: うん。娘のジェンは日本語のGCSE（中等教育修了資格）を持ってるんだけど、30歳になるまで一度も日本に行ったことがなくてね。あれだけ勉強したのに、その言語をちゃんと使わないなんて、本当にちょっともったいないと思ったんだ。だから彼女の30歳の誕生日プレゼントとして、僕たちは日本に来て、ええ、ここで数週間過ごしたんだ。彼女はかなり真剣に取り組んでいて、数年前には再び渡日して3ヶ月の語学コースを受講したんだ。今回のツアーにも同行し、僕たちの通訳を少し手伝ってくれる予定だよ。
Q: でもあの時来た時は、ライブも演奏もしてないんでしょ？
JO: いや、あのね、ゲスト出演みたいな感じでちょっとだけやったけど、ライブじゃないんだ。東京でギター弾いたって言えるように、数曲だけ演奏させてもらったんだ。東京はたぶん5,350回目のライブくらいかな。
Q: 凄い数のライブですね。
JO: 2020年のことだけど、シェパーズ・ブッシュ・エンパイアで5,000回目のライブを記念する大きなコンサートをやったんだ。疑う人がいるかもしれないから、念のため5,000回分のライブを全てリストアップした新聞まで作ったよ。
Q: じゃあ、ずっと日記をつけてきたわけですね？
JO: ああ、確か1993年に2000回目のライブを祝ったんだけど、最初の2000回は記録を残していたので、今回は必ず続けるようにしたんだ。いつか意味を持つかもしれないと思ったんだ。それから約3分の1の期間が経過したので、いずれ6,000公演を達成できることを願っているよ。
Q: 今回はビッグバンドと共に来日されますが、結成から33年と3分の1が経ちましたね。
JO: 振り返ると本当に驚くべきことだ。リチャードと僕がこのバンドを結成したのは僕が40歳頃で、それ以来ずっとバンドとして活動を続けている。メンバーはこれを「野心の欠如」と呼んでいる（笑）。33と1/3回転はLPレコードの回転数だから、ツアー中に世界中を回りながらLPを録音していく予定だ。クラウドファンディングで資金調達しているので、旅費の一部はこれで賄えるといいんだけど。
Q: ジョン、バンドのメンバーは誰ですか？
JO: ギターはリチャード・ホルガースで、エディ・アンド・ザ・ホット・ロッズでも活動している。リズムギターはマレー・トルキルドセン、ドラムはアダム・バタービー、ベースはシーモアだ。ドキュメンタリーを撮影しながらツアーをしているので、撮影クルーも数名連れてきているんだ。
Q: セットリストの選定について、今回が初来日なので選択肢はかなり広いでしょうね。
JO: そうだね。でもライブアルバム『The Set Remains The Same』の精神に沿って、基本はその路線でいくつもりさ。
Q: モーガン・フィッシャーとは何か計画があります？一週間ほど前に彼に会ったんだけど、君に会えるのを楽しみにしているって言ってましたよ。
JO: ああ、確かに彼が参加した僕のファースト・ソロ・アルバムのバンドで数曲やる予定だよ。あのアルバムでは彼がキーボードを担当し、ニール・イネスがプロデュースした。モーガンは自宅でちょっとしたセッションを主催していて、僕も招待されているので、そちらも組み込めればと思っているんだ。
